Suggestion: How to flag 7 heroes
Once you would have access to command 7 heroes, surely you don't want 8 different flag buttons? Here's an alternative. Look at the image above, see a new button there?
Yes, you can choose under which flag each hero belongs too. In other words, flags are now for commanding units and not individual heroes. For example, you can set melee fighters in Unit 1, midlines in Unit 2, and backlines in Unit 3. There would be 5 options total:
* Unit 1,2,3 .. commanding hero to go to respective flag whenever placed.
* Unit 4 .. this is the henchmen unit, or "all" flag.
* No Unit .. hero simply follows you around ignoring placed flags.
Default flags for heroes first time would be 1,2,3 in accordance to front/mid/backline which of course you can change. Next time you use same hero, it will remember it's last used unit. Also, units are NOT saved in template code, so it will not require or break any old template codes.
EDIT: You do NOT have to keep all hero windows open to control them, this idea simply change which flag they follow. You can keep all your hero windows closed if you wish and only flag them as you always have, just that now you know which flag each hero follows.

There's no way they're going to be able to fit 7 flags around the compass window and make it look nice, so this suggestion is really a great idea.

Sounds like a really good idea to me. It's simple, yet seems very effective. Now ANet needs another 3 months to get this programmed in.

Hm... I really like that 'team' idea.
I usually stick some heroes in the back line, some in the middle and one in melee.
I could use that.
I'd also like a way to define the area each 'team' can cover.
Click the flag, click and hold in the ground, drag the mouse, and the farther you drag, the bigger a circle you get, and the heroes can't get outside that circle.
That way you could foce them once and for all to stick in one place without falling in their kiting temptations, following you to smell your ass next to the enemy when you are melee, or running away to heal an idiot that doesn't stick close to the rest of the party.

7 heros..... 7 heros.... why in the world would anyone need to micromanage, or flag hero's around??? its easy enough to play through everything hm and nm with only 3 hero's without having to flag them and with 4 added to that its really not going to be needed

Some hero builds require a bit of micro-managing. I know I have to micro Keystone at times on Gwen cause she forgets to cast Symbolic Celerity. Heroes aren't perfect. They need guidance at times.

OT: Was suggested already a few hours before you suggested it.

I dont like it IMO, I personally dont want to have 7 skill bars open at all times or open one every time i want to flag a hero around. Personally i think another suggestion that spyderarachnid put the link up to is better personally because it would be easier just to have it available on a window thats already open all the time.
but thats just me

ahh yeah, need capability for more distinct flagging for sure. would prolly look weird if you had that many buttons on your radar eh? i'm sure anet will take this into consideration. (hopefully)

I do like this idea but the only negative I spot is that it might take a little bit to click on each individual hero and assign them a flag number. Other than that, fantastic idea!

Having the control panels open for flag placement, will crowd the screen too much. Either leave them on the compass, or add the flags next to their name on the party list.
To avoid having to micro flags, it would be nice, though improbable, to auto spread based on the weapon in their hands.

Why don't we have people this clever working at Anet?

Pretty good idea.
All it takes is basically setting the hero you want to the corresponding flag number you want.
Can be done in an outpost or done on the battlefield in just a couple seconds.

I think it may be easier to implement if they just made it such that a few heros are assigned to flags 1,2,2. Another Idea that I liked from one of the forum suggestions was the idea of distance rings. In essence heros are placed in relation to the pc which allows customized formations.

Yes something along those lines would be very useful esp as it adds another dimension to the game.
We have come a long way in gw from a game intended to be all players with henchmen filling in as a poor substitute when necessary to heroes with additional commands.
A basic party formation command system is essential to take this part of the game to the next level.
Front mid and back lines good idea I always wanted my RAnger to actually use his long range ability instead of getting stuck in melee all to often.
Perhaps a party attitude command as well, we have the attack guard and avoid combat options they could be modified slightly as well.
Ideally I would like a formation command so that I can concentrate an attack on a single target then move to a defensive formation and finally a scatter command to minimise area effect damage.
Flagging only goes so far in being an effective tool too often you get caught out and lose party members because you are trying to organise a fighting retreat and constantly having to map remap etc doesn't work.
Would be very happy if they came up with something extra for hero command, and yes I know the game is easy "for some" as is and yes this would make it even easier but its also about fun too.
By all means allow the enemy similar advantages.

Although i love the idea, as someone else said above the fact you would have to open the skillbar of all 7 heros would seriously compact the screen terrible idea.
BUT has demostrated in someone else's post about a similar idea but just having the flag next to there name in the party window has been signed by me.
